Extra Credit - Being Progressive

In the past, I've had you think about the "now what" aspect of school work, which is the idea that I hope the reading, writing, and thinking we do in class can be used to in your life beyond Fox Lane. It also means that there are examples of people who are using the type of thinking we're doing to change their lives and the lives of others. Here are links to a few places that are doing just that:

High-school girl thinking progressively, and people helping girls live the lives they choose.

  1. In my mind, organizations like this are astounding. The Girl Project has an took a great idea and turned it into something inspiring. To be able to start a chain reaction of education for girls is something that should be applauded. I can't get passed the way they were able to squeeze such a powerful message into a two minute video. I also like that this is another way to assist developing countries. By sending a girl to school we are essentially saving her and her posterity from a horrible cycle of disease, abuse, and suffering. This seems extremely hopeful for the future of these countries.

  2. In the United States education is a big part of our culture. In most developing countries everyday they worry about when will the next time they eat be. Developing countries don't put a lot of emphasis on education because they live in poverty and need to earn money for basic needs. A mother of a son and daughter will most likely put their son through school and send their daughter to get a job as soon as she is old enough. The son can get a job earning more money once he is educated and where he can earn money for the family, where as if the girl goes through school she will still get paid the same as if she didn't. Therefore it makes no sense to a family that lives in poverty to send their daughter through school if she can get a job and put food on the table. Now starting at age 14 the family will now force the daughter to marry so that her husband can provide her with her basic needs. Now she will get abused and for the rest of her life be unhappy. The Girl Project, like Dan said, is an amazing idea that starts small and in the end spreads worldwide. By donating money, they help put girls through secondary school, and then on to college. This will then stop the cycle of teenage parenthood, and this girl will teach her family and her community the way a girl should live. Then slowly this third world glass ceiling will be lifted and women will start to get treated equally. Thanks to these great organizations it only takes a few dollars out of everyone's pocket to make a big difference in this world.

  3. In both these videos girls are going against the Cult of Domesticity and True Womanhood. These women are changing society’s expectation and view of women for the better. A high percentage of girls are finding older men and relying on them. Girls are getting married and having children before they have grown up them self and received a proper education. There are organizations trying to prevent this as we saw in the videos. The organizations have great intentions and could really have a positive impact on the futures of many girls. Seventy percent of children who are not being educated are girls. That is an extreme amount and it should not be acceptable. Without an education women have to relay on others, whether it is their family or a husband. Society needs to get rid of the glass ceiling, which is stopping some women from being successful on their own. These organizations should be encouraged and supported by all of society to help make women more independent and eliminate the feeling that “men are superior”.
