Our Place in the Universe

EXTRA CREDIT:  Watch the video I've linked HERE and write about your connections to it and /or between it and OUR TOWN.

  1. I really enjoyed this video. I found it very interesting the way this video starts off with talking about something as small as an atom and then continues to larger components such as nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen. Lastly, the universe is discussed and compared each human being. I interpreted that the main point of this video was trying to say that you can make the universe as big or small as you want to. Everyone could be a significant figure in the world if the try. I know this sounds clique, however, while watching this video I couldn’t help but to compare myself to an ant. I wondered how something as small as an ant would feel in a place as enormous as the earth. But from this video I established that maybe an ant could do the same in its colony as a human could in the community. Therefore, if everyone took action and participated in their community the world would suddenly seem smaller to most.

  2. I agree with Amanda. I found that while I watched this video I was astounded by what I was seeing and hearing. I think that the idea that resonated with me the most was about how we everything is connected. We are all a part of the tiny atoms that float around us, the enormous stars that shine above us, and most importantly we are all a part of each other. All human beings are made of the same atoms from the same universe and I think that this idea is mind-boggling.

I think that this relates to the idea from OUR TOWN about focusing in and out. In OUR TOWN Thorton Wilder plays with the curiosity of what is beyond "our town". I think that knowing that our atoms are shared with the universe's atoms definitely leads to a certain curiosity.

  3. I felt the video was very interesting. It really lays out how we are connected to what's around us and where we come from. We (the people) are so small in such a big universe. But at the same time we connect with everything around us. The video states, "..guts made of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen.. these ingredients now create new galaxies and planets... we are a part of this universe, we are in this universe.. the universe is in us." I think some of the statements that were said in this video were extremely powerful and fascinating. In reality, we as humans really are connected with the universe around us. The gases we inhale and exhale create new galaxies and planets. Every aspect of our universe is connected to one another. In such a big world that's so hard to see when humans are so small compared to our surroundings.
